Planning for your Lifestyle Session

When planning a lifestyle portrait session, here are ways to plan and be prepared

Personality

who are are you? what defines you as an individual, family, a couple? Do you enjoy the outdoors together? do one of you have an interesting hobby such as old biplanes? all of the elements that define you as a person can be incorporated into your photo session. Do you have kids that are curious about their world and need environments where they can explore? Do you want your family photos with sweeping vistas of the valley? Or perhaps you have your own ideas and want to journey to places you and your partner, your family, enjoy.

Location

You have thought about the above. Remember, the sky's the limit. if you want your photos taken in a hot air balloon, the venetian in vegas, an airplane graveyard, at the top of camelback mountain, old western style in jerome or bisbee, or a park with grass to play and roll around on, it is your session.

What to Wear

if there is more than person in the shoot, uniformity is key. You don't want one person standing out more than the others. Like colors are ideal. Darker colors work better than lighter colors. You want to stand out from your background, not each other. Best suggestion: black tops and denim jeans. If you are doing engagements photos and the gal wants to get dolled up, by all means! If you want to wear the red cocktail dress that you wore the night your beau proposed, please do. But, your guy should wear something that will complement, not clash, with what you are wearing.

Local Suggestions

click on the link above, and see a gallery of family photos taken in the area. If you have young kids, the Scottsdale Civic Center Plaza is great. Grass, trees, flowers, public sculpture, and fountins provide many great back-drops. The Japanese Friendship Gardens in Phoenix are also beautiful and perfect for individuals, couples, or families. Any one of the local resorts make for gorgeous destinations for portrait photography. However, not all resorts will allow photos on the property. Chances of having permission for photos on the property are greatly increased if you are a guest or planning a future event there. Call ahead to be sure that you will be permitted to have your portraits taken there.
